Historic Garden Tour

Planned and planted by Joseph Shipley over 150 years ago, the historic garden at Rockwood surrounds the mansion and reflects Shipley's love of the contemporary English landscape gardens of the mid Nineteenth Century.

A new philosophy of garden design emerged in England in the mid 19th century. Dissatisfied with the formal tidy gardens of Europe, landscape designers of this era vowed to seek and follow nature, and give romance and pleasure to the gardens they created. The entire property became a landscape garden unified in a subtle, naturalistic design. Called gardenesque, this style inspired Joseph Shipley to create the gardens at Rockwood.

Though the garden has undergone changes over the years including the loss and addition of trees and shrubs, and a restoration in 2000, some of Shipley's original plantings remain along  with the essence of the gardenesque style he loved.

The Bringhursts added a more formal flower garden to the Walled Garden  in 1913 which still boasts magnificent Dr. Van Fleet Roses each May
