Lead Program

On September 30, 2019 the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded more than $314 million to 77 state and local government agencies to protect children and families from lead-based paint and home health hazards. New Castle County was awarded a $3.3 million-dollar grant for this initiative, and a $300,000 supplemental grant for a Healthy Homes Program.

This grant will give us the opportunity to conduct lead abatement on over 130 homes. Preference is given to tenants or homeowners with children under the age of 6, or pregnant women. If a family is eligible to participate in our program, we will conduct a Lead Risk Assessment (LRA), and if the results are positive, we may need to relocate each family for up to 10 days while the lead paint is being removed. In addition, if any health hazards are found during the assessment then we may be able to fix the problem for FREE.
